McEachern Junior Indians Take Home the Win for Cobb County

The sheriffs of Cobb (CCSO), Fulton (FCSO), and Gwinnett (GCSO) counties, in collaboration with Score Atlanta and county school football programs hosted the 3rd Annual Sheriffs’ Cup Invitational, a two-part event that celebrated community spirit with a formal banquet and a competitive football tournament.

Sheriffs’ Cup 2024 Banquet:

The festivities kicked off with the Sheriffs’ Cup 2024 Banquet on Friday, August 2, setting a lively tone for the weekend. Guests arrived to a warm welcome from Randi Okray, who doubled as CCSO communications and PR specialist and the evenings emcee, followed by an inspiring invocation from Chief of Staff David Jones, a former college athlete. The players and their parents were treated to a delicious dinner catered by Grits and Eggs, courtesy of Chef Rasul.

The evening continued with engaging speeches from Sheriff Keybo Taylor of GCSO, who founded the Sheriff’s Cup initiative, Capt. Ravoris Latimore from FCSO, and CCSO’s dynamic duo, Chief Deputy Rhonda Anderson and Asst. Chief Deputy Gina Hawkins, who brought fun energy to the event. A standout moment was the heartfelt speech by Michael “Moon” Thompson, former Atlanta Falcons player, followed by inspiring words from Dr. Travis Barber. The night concluded with a recap video from last year’s Sheriff’s Cup, motivating the players for their upcoming game and a closing prayer led by Chief Deputy Anderson.

Sheriffs’ Cup Football Tournament:

On Saturday, August 3, the excitement filled the stadium at McEachern High School with the football tournament. Seventh-grade teams from Mill Creek Hawks, representing Gwinnett County, CT Martin Vikings representing Fulton County, and McEachern Junior Indians representing Cobb County battled it out in a round-robin format, showcasing their talents and sportsmanship.

The McEachern Junior Indians claimed the championship title, and Sheriff Craig Owens personally called to congratulate the team on their victory.

The Sheriffs’ Cup was not just about football; it was about community, camaraderie, and character building. The sheriffs engaged with the young men on how to be positive role models and leaders in their communities, addressing gang recruitment challenges and offering resources to combat bullying. This initiative was a home run for personal growth, skill development, and community spirit.
